Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is expanding to Miami with plans to develop a 35-acre campus in the Wynwood Arts District, funded by a gift from billionaire Ken Griffin.
“This is a defining moment for Wynwood, and it didn’t happen by accident,” said Wynwood Business Improvement District chairman David Lombardi in a statement. “The vision has always been to build a lasting neighborhood where creativity and entrepreneurship can thrive. We see Carnegie Mellon’s choice of Wynwood as a vote of confidence in that work and in the community that made it possible. CMU’s presence can accelerate the progress already underway here.”
CMU's Miami footprint at the Mana Wynwood convention center site along NW 23rd Street is expected to support over 3,500 students, 300 faculty, and 600 staff, featuring research hubs, venture studios, and design spaces embedded in the Wynwood Arts District.
Funded by a historic $3 billion donation from Citadel chief executive officer Ken Griffin, the project represents the largest single gift ever awarded to an American university, with two-thirds of the capital directly backing the Miami expansion.
Construction is expected to commence in 2027, and the first wave of enrollments is expected in 2028.
